A Pastor's Journey Toward Navy Reserve Chaplaincy at 48
Entry #6
June 14, 2026 — The Lord's Day
Today was a Sabbath day—a day set aside for worship, ministry, rest, and reflection. Unlike the previous days of training and physical preparation, I intentionally took the day off from running and exercise. While physical discipline is important, learning to rest and worship is equally necessary.
The morning began with church responsibilities. I arrived at the office around 8:00 AM and was able to have both elders sign my ecclesiastical ministry form. The document affirmed my pastoral ministry, preaching responsibilities, and administration of the ordinances of baptism and communion. While it was simply another step in the process, it served as a reminder of the many years the Lord has allowed me to serve in pastoral ministry and the credibility that faithful ministry builds over time.
Morning worship at Family Bible Fellowship was a tremendous blessing. Attendance was strong, and I had the privilege of preaching from Genesis 47:1–12, a message entitled "The Pathway to Preservation." The central truth of the passage was clear: God uses the position of one faithful man to preserve, protect, and provide for His people.
The sermon unfolded through three major movements:
The Identification (Genesis 47:1–4)
The Conversation (Genesis 47:5–9)
The Preservation (Genesis 47:10–12)
As Joseph's family arrived in Egypt during a severe famine, we were reminded once again of God's providential care and His faithfulness to preserve His covenant people. Ultimately, the passage points beyond Joseph to Jesus Christ, the One who eternally preserves His people and secures their future by His grace.
Following the service, I returned home and enjoyed a late lunch around 2:00 PM. The meal consisted of a grilled chicken salad with some shredded beef, followed later by two bowls of taco soup. I also enjoyed a latte containing approximately a tablespoon each of honey and maple syrup. Sunday meals have often become a small celebration after a week of ministry and sermon preparation.
One of the most encouraging developments of the day came during my morning weigh-in. The scale read 270 pounds, a significant improvement from the 285 pounds recorded just days earlier at the beginning of this journey. While I understand that weight fluctuates and long-term consistency matters most, it was encouraging to see measurable progress.
The remainder of the afternoon and evening was intentionally restful. I rented and watched the documentary series Carrier with Jennifer, spending nearly seven hours observing life aboard a Navy aircraft carrier. Beyond entertainment, I viewed it as part of my ongoing effort to better understand Navy culture and the lives of those I hope to serve if the Lord opens the door to chaplaincy. Watching the sailors work, sacrifice, and live together at sea provided a glimpse into a world that is still largely unfamiliar to me.
As the day came to a close around 11:00 PM, I found myself reflecting on the goodness of God. Ministry was fruitful, family time was meaningful, and the opportunity to rest was refreshing. The journey toward chaplaincy continues one day at a time, but today served as a reminder that before I am a candidate, a pastor, or a future chaplain, I am first a worshiper of Christ.
Scripture for Reflection
Psalm 46:10 — "Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." (NASB95)
Lessons Learned Today
Rest is not laziness; it is part of faithful stewardship.
The Lord's Day is a gift meant for worship, fellowship, and renewal.
Faithful ministry over many years provides credibility for future opportunities.
God continues to encourage through small evidences of progress.
Understanding those we hope to serve requires intentional learning and observation.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the privilege of worshiping with Your people today. Thank You for the opportunity to preach Your Word, spend time with family, and enjoy a day of rest. Continue to prepare me for whatever lies ahead, and help me never become so focused on future opportunities that I neglect present faithfulness. May Christ remain the center of every ambition, every goal, and every decision. Amen.
