From Pulpit to Navy Blue - Day #3

A Pastor's Journey Toward Navy Reserve Chaplaincy at 48

Entry #3

June 11, 2026

Today was a full day of preparation, ministry, and continued progress toward better health. Looking back over the day, I am encouraged by the consistency that is beginning to develop in both my physical training and my efforts to prepare for the possibility of Navy Reserve chaplaincy.

The morning began with my normal routine. I spent time with Jennifer and made her morning coffee before settling into my Bible reading. Starting the day in God's Word continues to provide the perspective needed to keep every goal and ambition properly centered on Christ.

After my Bible reading, I headed out for my run. This morning I completed a two-mile run/walk in just under thirty minutes and found myself running significantly more than I had during previous workouts. While there is still a long way to go, it was encouraging to see measurable progress. Every mile completed is evidence that consistency is producing results.

As part of my Navy preparation, I also spent time laminating reference sheets containing both Navy and Marine Corps ranks. I successfully memorized the enlisted Navy ranks and began working on the officer ranks. Once those are firmly committed to memory, I plan to continue learning the Marine Corps ranking structure as well. Though these may seem like small details, they represent part of learning the culture and environment of those I hope to serve.

My blood pressure reading this morning after using the bathroom was encouraging. While there have been fluctuations throughout the week, seeing positive numbers reminds me that weight loss, exercise, and healthier habits can make a meaningful difference over time.

Later in the day, I had lunch with Brian McDaniel at LongHorn Steakhouse. I ordered an eight-ounce sirloin and a strawberry salad, continuing my effort to make healthier food choices while maintaining a high-protein diet.

Following lunch, I made a trip to Beaufort to pick up socks and purchase a carrot cake for Jennifer. With her upcoming surgery approaching, it was good to spend time preparing and caring for practical needs at home.

After returning home, I took a much-needed two-hour nap before heading to the church office. There I completed preparations for Sunday's sermon from Genesis 47:1–12, "The Pathway to Preservation." Finishing the sermon brought a sense of relief and gratitude as another week of preaching preparation came together.

Dinner consisted of chicken and rice with the family. Later in the evening, I completed a short aerobic workout that included dirty squats, opposite leg lifts, crunches, same-side knee lifts, and under-leg claps. While not an intense workout, it allowed me to finish the day moving and continue building healthy habits.

The day concluded around 10:00 PM. As I reflected on everything accomplished, I was reminded that progress rarely comes through dramatic moments. More often it is the result of small acts of faithfulness repeated day after day. Whether preparing sermons, training physically, studying military material, or caring for family, the Lord uses ordinary faithfulness to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

Scripture for Reflection

Galatians 6:9"Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary." (NASB95)

Lessons Learned Today

  • Consistency produces progress even when results seem slow.

  • Small improvements should be celebrated because they point toward larger goals.

  • Preparation requires both physical discipline and mental focus.

  • Faithfulness in family responsibilities remains an essential part of ministry.

  • God often works through ordinary daily obedience rather than extraordinary events.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the progress You allowed today. Thank You for the strength to run farther, study harder, serve faithfully, and care for my family. Help me remain disciplined in both spiritual and physical matters. Guard my heart from discouragement and keep my eyes fixed upon Christ. May every step of this journey bring glory to You and prepare me for whatever service You have planned. Amen.
